Missourians know severe weather comes with the territory. From powerful thunderstorms to devastating tornadoes, preparedness is vital.  Understanding the dangers and staying informed are key to keeping you and your family safe.

Tornadoes: A Force to Be Reckoned With

A tornado is a violently rotating column of air extending from a thunderstorm directly to the ground. With wind speeds reaching 300 mph, these destructive forces can leave miles-long paths of damage. Missouri's long history with tornadoes underscores the importance of knowing the difference between a Tornado Watch (conditions are favorable) and a Tornado Warning (take cover immediately).

Missouri's Tornado Legacy

Since 1950, Missouri has seen over 2500 tornadoes. The St. Louis region experiences an average of 12-14 tornadoes annually, though some years may see significantly more.  The 2011 Joplin EF5 tornado stands as a somber reminder of the destructive power these storms can unleash.

Tornado Intensities and Risks

While tornadoes can happen year-round, April and May see the highest activity. Fortunately, most tornadoes in Missouri fall into the weaker EF0/EF1 categories. However, the state has experienced the full range of intensities, including rare but devastating EF4/EF5 events.
