The Orlando Magic's impressive season, their best since 2010, isn't just about talent, it's about the strong connections within the team.
ORLANDO — While on-court action often takes the spotlight, the unseen bonds and relationships within a team can significantly impact their success.
This young Orlando Magic squad, enjoying their best season in over a decade, boasts undeniable talent, with rising stars Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner leading the charge. Their improvement from 34 wins last season to 47 wins and a No. 5 seed in the Eastern Conference Playoffs this year is a testament to their on-court growth.
However, Coach Jamahl Mosley attributes a large portion of their success to the camaraderie and connection the team shares off the court.
"It's been a key factor all year, and it's a big part of what makes this team special," Mosley remarked. "I've mentioned before that this group is special, and it's not just about their on-court performance. It's about how they interact and care for one another off the court."
This strong bond has helped the Magic navigate challenging stretches, like their recent four losses in six games and the threat of falling into the play-in tournament. They overcame these hurdles, securing a crucial win against the Milwaukee Bucks in the final regular season game. It's also evident in their resilience during the Eastern Conference Playoffs, where they rallied from a 2-0 deficit to tie the series against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Banchero echoes Mosley's sentiments, highlighting how a team's positive dynamic makes everything easier.
"When you genuinely enjoy being around your teammates, it makes collaboration and accountability much smoother," Banchero shared. "I'm incredibly grateful to be part of this team with such amazing individuals."
Mosley added, "They celebrate each other's successes and are committed to doing things the right way, both on and off the court. From attending Cole Anthony's bowling event to contributing to the community, these actions showcase what makes this group truly special."
With a bright future ahead, having a core group with a strong on-and-off court bond is a significant asset for the Magic. By nurturing these relationships and continuing to improve, the team has the potential to evolve from a rising young squad to a dominant force in the Eastern Conference.
The Magic face the Cavaliers in a pivotal Game 5 on Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET at the Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse, with the victor gaining a crucial 3-2 series lead on the path to the Eastern Conference Semifinals.
