Meta Platforms announced the discontinuation of its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, encompassing recruitment, development, and vendor selection programs, according to an internal communication shared on the company's employee forum Friday.

The announcement precedes President-elect Donald Trump's upcoming inauguration, as the technology giant seeks to improve its standing with the incoming leader, who has previously condemned its content moderation practices and issued legal warnings to its chief executive.

"We're witnessing evolving legal and regulatory frameworks surrounding diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives across the United States," Janelle Gale, Meta's Vice President of Human Resources, stated in the message, which Reuters obtained.

Gale referenced recent Supreme Court rulings that "indicate a transformation" in the judicial system's approach to DEI programs.

"The concept of 'DEI' has become increasingly contentious, partially because certain groups interpret it as promoting preferential consideration for specific demographics," she explained.

While Meta will maintain its commitment to seeking candidates from diverse backgrounds, it will discontinue its "Diverse Slate Approach," according to Gale.

The organization will dissolve its dedicated DEI division, the message revealed. Chief Diversity Officer Maxine Williams will transition to a new position focusing on accessibility and community engagement, as outlined in the communication.

An employee response to Gale's announcement described it as "distressing news."

The social media corporation recently appointed three new board members, including Dana White, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Chief Executive and Trump confidant.

Previously, Meta promoted conservative figure Joel Kaplan to chief global affairs officer, replacing predecessor Nick Clegg.
